Gurmukh Singh Sandhu commonly known as Garry Sandhu was born on 4 April , 1984 . Garry Sandhu was brought up in the village of Rurka Kallan , Tehsil Phillaur, Jalandhar, Punjab . At a very young age Garry learnt the art of Kavishri from his guru , Gudeep Singh Sandhu . He started performing at local gurudwaras and nearby villages . Hence Garry stated his career from a spiritual platform and later on joined the Punjabi music industry . In 2002 , Garry Sandhu moved to Birmingham , UK and was encouraged by family members to pursue his singing career . Early on in UK , he performed in wedding functions and private shows . Later Garry Sandhu was noticed by some producers and released his track . He made his debut in the music industry with the single , ‘Main Nee Peenda’ in 2010. The track was immensely successful and was declared a super-hit . The same year itself , Garry Sandhu collaborated with ‘Punjabi Reggae King ‘ , Roach Killa and producer Surinder Rattan for his second track, ‘Dil De De’. The track topped many charts and Sandhu became one of the most famous UK Bhangra artists .Garry Sandhu returned for his third single under SPICE MEDIA label for Valentines 2011 with’Sahan To Pyariya’ in collaboration with DJ H . Again , this track was a massive hit as well . Come May 2011 , Garry Sandhu teamed up with DJ Dipps for his single ‘Tohar’ . Sandhu’s track was being touted as one of the biggest tracks for the summer. The song was an instant hit and went on to rack over 2 million views on YouTube . His glamours and peaking career stumbled and took a halt when the UK border agency arrested him in October,2011. Many sources said Sandhu to be in UK on illegal basis .Garry Sandhu was kept in custody at the Detention center , and later deported back to India . On his return to India , Sandhu was announced to have quit music . Major Varinder Kumar Sidhu , his childhood friend and his brother Harsh Sidhu convinced him to get his career back on track . Soon under Moviebox , in May 2012 , Garry Sandhu released ‘Brick’ with music given by GV . The track topped mainstream charts and hit No.67th position worldwide on its release weekend which hadn’t been hit by a Punjabi song for the last few years . Two months later in July , he released the track ‘Ik Gal’ featuring Sudesh Kumari also under Moviebox . And again with no surprises , the song was immensely successful . He released his debut album in December 2012 by the name of ‘Magic’ . Garry Sandhu promoted his album through his production company , ‘Fresh Media Records’ . His recent releases include ,’Ik Tera Sahara’(2013) under his own label ,’Fresh Media Records’. Music was given by Rupin Kahlon . Garry Sandhu also released , ‘Chunni de Sitare’ with DJ Sonu Dhillon under T-series . Also in 2013 , he teamed up with Roach Killa once again and released the track called ‘Heartbroken’. His future projects include ‘Malak Di Mehar Naal’ produced by Rupin Kahon and ‘Ik Gal 2′ with Dj Dips and Sudesh Kumari once again . Lyrics of ‘ik gal 2′ have been written by Garry Sandhu himself .

Satinder Sartaj

Satinder Pal Singh Saini also known as Satinder Sartaj was born in village of Bajrawar , Hoshiarpur , Punjab . He belongs to a family of an agricultural background . As a child Satinder Sartaj was very much inspired by nature and its works . He wondered about the serious aspects of life . Sartaj studied in his own village in a government school until metric and did his 11th and 12th grade from neighboring village of Patti . He went on to graduate from Government College , Hoshiarpur with Honors in Music . Satinder Sartaj followed this with a M. Phil in Sufi Music singing and later on a Ph.D in Sufi Singing (gayan) from Punjab University, Chandigarh. Satinder Sartaj also completed a five-year diploma in Classical Music from Jalandhar. Along with all these qualifications Satinder Sartaj equipped himself with a Certificate Course and Diploma in Persian language . Even as a child Sartaj performed in various functions . Before Satinder Sartaj became famous , he participated and won many musical events . He made an appearance in Annu Kapoor’s ‘Zee Antakshari’show where he participated in the folk category and won much acclaim . Satinder Sartaj was also first runner-up in the ’24th All-India Light Vocal Festival’ and a topper in the ‘Punjab Heritage Foundation Competitions’ . He made his debut in Punjabi Music Industry with , ‘Mehfil-E-Sartaaj – Live Concert’ in 2009 . Some of the popular tracks of this album were , ‘Sai’ , ‘Ammi’ , ‘Dil’ , ‘Paani’ among many others . The peculiar element of all of his songs and albums was that they struck a strong chord not only with the masses but also with all age groups . Satinder Sartaj also released ,’Ibadat – Mehfil-E-Sartaaj’, in the same year under ‘Finetone Cassettes Industries’ . From this album songs such as , ‘Ibadat’ , ‘Mann’ , ‘Tappe’ , ‘Tere Qurbaan’ received much appreciation . Then under ‘Speed Records’ Sartaj released , ‘Sartaaj’(2010) , ‘Cheerey Wala Sartaaj’(2011) and ‘Sartaaj Live’(2012) . Popular songs from these albums include , ‘Aadmi’ , ‘Dastaar’ , ‘Dil Sabh De Vakhre’ , ‘Ishqe Lyi Qurbania’ ,

Malkit Singh Boparai was born on 13 September , 1962 in village Hussainpur , Jalandhar . He was raised in Nakodar , Jalandhar and moved to Birmingham , England in 1984 . From a very young age Malkit Singh had the knack and flair of singing and playing musical instruments . Before moving to England Malkit Singh studied in Khalsa College , Jalandhar in 1980 where he obtained his B.A degree in Arts . It was here where he met his ustad – Professor Inderjit Singh . Malkit Singh staying true to the meaning of his name , one who rules the world, spread Punjabi music across continents in the early days of the industry and is a major contributor to the industry’s current success . Malkit Singh made his debut onto the scene with the album , ‘Nach Gidhe Wich’ . The album was an all time blockbuster with tracks such as ,’Nach Gidhe Wich kar Gayee Kamal’ and ‘Gur Naloon Ishq Mitha’ . Malkit Singh went on to release many albums some of them being ‘I Love Golden Star’ , ‘Putt Sardara De’ , ‘Chott Nigary Lawo’ , ‘Fast Forward’ , ‘Hai Shava’ , ‘Gal Sunja’ , ‘Singho Ho Jo Kathe’ , ‘Chak Deh Dholia’ , ‘Midas Touch’ , ‘Midas Touch 2′ among many others . With sales of over 4.9 million records in his two decade plus career , Malkit Singh was listed by the Guinness Book of Records as the biggest selling Bhangra solo artist of all time in 2000 . His tracks ‘Chal Hun’ and ‘Jind Mahi’ from the blockbuster ‘Bend It Like Beckham’ film soundtrack were also big hits . Malkit Singh also sang songs in the albums , ‘The New Adventures of Jassi Sidhu’ (2008) and ‘The Folk King’(2012) . ‘The Folk King’ was an album released as a tribute to the legendary one and all , Kuldeep Manak . Other famous artists such as A.S. Kang, Jazzy B, Sukshinder Shinda, Manmohan Waris Balwinder Safri and Angrej Ali also contributed to the album . Malkit Singh has a long list of awards and honors bestowed upon him . In 1997 he received the recognition of the city of Los Angles for services to the Indian community as the Best Punjabi Male Singer and the Most Outstanding Bhangra Track for ‘Tootak Tootak Thothiyan’ . He also received the ‘punjabi cultural award’ from the former prime minister of India , I.K Gujral . Malkit Singh is also the first Punjabi singer to be honored with an MBE . The ‘Most Excellent Order of the British Empire’ is nominated by the British government and is presented by the Queen of United Kingdom . The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry established on 4th june 1917 by King George V. This signifies and highlights the contribution made by Malkit Singh through his songs and his music .

Sukshinder Singh Bhullar whom we all know as Sukshinder Shinda was born on may 29 , 1979 in Birmingham , United Kingdom . In the music industry he is known by the name of ‘The Music Man’. Shinda has produced , sung and collaborated in innumerable tracks . Sukshinder Shinda made his debut with the album , ‘Dhol Beat Ek(1)’ in 1989 . He followed that album with ‘Maximum Bass’ in 1996 . In 1998 Shinda released two versions of ‘Dhol Beat 2′ , one under Kiss Records and the under Venus Records . Two years later in 2000 Sukshinder Shinda released , ‘Men of Respect’ which featured songs of legendary artist such as Sardool Sikandar , Gurdas Maan , Kuldeep Manak and so on . The album was a big hit . In 2000 Shinda was also the music director of the film , ‘Shaheed Udham Singh’ which included the starcast of Gurdas Maan , Raj Babbar , Juhi Chawla , Amrish Puri , Shatrughan Sinha , Ranjeet and many more . Also the same year Sukshinder Shinda released the album , ‘The O.G’s’ under moviebox . In 2001 , Shinda produced the album , ‘The Way it is’ , and the following year in 2002 Shinda released his first solo album, ‘Phases’, which featured the singles ‘Daroo’ and ‘Dil’. In 2003 Shinda came up with ,’Living Loud’ and ‘Gal Sunja’ . Two years later Sukshinder Shinda released ‘UK Dhol Crusader’ under Tips and ‘Balle’ under MovieBox. In 2006 ,he released another album titled , ‘Collaborations’ in which tracks such as ‘Collaborations’ , ‘Oh Na Kudi Labdi’ , ‘Charka’ and ‘Boliyan Te Boliyan’ were a major hit . It also included artists such as Jazzy B , Gurdas Maan , A.S Kang , Shin , Meshi among many . Shinda was the music director of hindi film ‘Teesri-Aankh:The Hidden Camera’ which starred Sunny Deol and Ayub Khan . He also was the music director of punjabi movie ‘Dil Apna Punjabi’ . The following year Sukshinder Shinda released the album ,’Living the Dream’ . His more recent projects include ,’Collaborations 2′ (2009) , ‘Jadoo’ (2010), ‘Rock Da Party’ (2012) and ‘Collaborations 3′(2013) . Sukshinder shinda also released two religious albums, ‘Satguru Mera’ (2009) under Moviebox records and ‘Choj Khalseh De’ (2013) under Dharamseva records . Sukshinder Shinda’s recent film projects include ‘Ishq Be Parwah’ (2008) , ‘Munde U.K. De’(2009) , ‘Ik Kudi Punjab Di’ (2010) , ‘Welcome to Punjab’(2011) and ‘Best of Luck’(2013) . ‘Munde UK De’ and ‘Ik Kudi Punjab Di’ starred Amrinder Gill . ‘Best of Luck’ which was one of the biggest grosser of the film industry included Jazzy B , Gippy Grewal , Binnu Dhillon , Simran Kaur Mundi , Sonam Bajwa , Puneet Issar , Karamjit Anmol , Miss Pooja and many more . Shinda has produced or collaborated on more than 200 albums, including all of Jazzy B’s releases and the majority of Amrinder Gill’s .

If there was a list to be made of the leading artists in Punjabi music industry and Punjabi film industry then currently, Diljit Dosanjh would be in the top 2 of both lists if not leading them . Diljit Dosanjh was born on 6 January ,1984 in the village Dosanjh Kallan which is close to Phagwara . His father , S.Balbir Singh Dosanjh used to work in roadways and his mother was a house-wife . He spent his early childhood in a typical Punjabi agricultural family environment . He later shifted to Ludhiana where he currently resides as well . Diljit Dosanjh got his education from Sri Guru Harkrishan Public School at Dugri road . He used to do kirtan in gurudwaras and sing in small get-togethers . Diljit always had the zest for singing and molded his craft under his gurus Prof. Kartar Singh , Hari dutt Sharma and S.Gobinder Singh ji . His music career began in 2003 with the release of his album , ‘Ishq da Uda Adda’ , under T-series and music director Babloo . The album was much liked and well received by the audience . This was followed by his second album , ‘Dil’ , which was released in 2004 also under T-series. The album went on to be a super-hit and cemented Diljit’s position in the industry . Songs such as ‘Dil Saade Naal La Lai’ and ‘Nikli Baraat’ topped charts . In 2005 Diljit Dosanjh came up with his best selling album , ‘Smile’ . The album was a commercial blockbuster and tracks such as , ‘Kuwariyaan’ , ‘Smile’ , ‘Paggan Bochhmian Waale’ played on television and radio channels for numerous months . The following year he released , ‘Ishq ho Gya’ with Sachin Ahuja as the music director . This album also did well commercially . Diljit Dosanjh released the album ‘Chocolate’ in 2008 under Speed Records and ‘The Next Level’ in 2009 under T-series again . In the album ‘The Next Level’ , he collaborated with Honey Singh for some songs . Some of the famous tracks from these albums include ‘Sharaab’ , ‘Munde Pub’ , ‘Chocolate’ , ‘Dil Nachda’ , ‘Panga’ , ‘Desi Daroo’ , ‘Los Angeles’ among many others . Honey Singh and Diljit Dosanjh again collaborated and produced singles ‘Bhagat Singh’ (2009) , ‘Dance With Me’ (2009) , ‘Main Me & Myself ‘(2010) , ‘Lak 28 Kudi Da’ (2011) , ‘Catty Eyes’ (2011) and ‘Goliyan’ (2012) . All of these tracks were massive hits with the audience world wide . These singles helped both artists to establish an even wider fan base . Diljit dosanjh made his debut in punjabi film industry with a cameo role in ‘Mel Karade Rabba’ in 2010 . The film included the likes of , Jimmy Shergill , Neeru Bajwa , Gippy Grewal , Shavinder Mahal and Sartajpal Singh Virk among many others . The film was a huge success . He went on to act in , ‘The Lion of Punjab’ (2011) , ‘Jihne Mera Dil Luteya’ (2011) and ‘Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya’(2012) . But Diljit Dosanjh reached the peak of his fame with the success of the blockbuster cult film , ‘Jatt and Juliet’ (2012) and ‘Jatt and Juliet 2′ (2013) . He played the role of Punjab police constable , Fateh Singh . Although a sequel but the plot of both movies is completely different . Characters such as Fateh Singh , Pooja ( Neeru Bajwa) , Shampy ( Rana Ranbir ) , Shampy’s father ( B.N Sharma ) , Joginder Singh (Jaswinder Bhalla )and Fateh Singh’s mother (Anita Devgan) have been carried forward to the sequel . In jatt and juliet 2 Jazzy B also did a great cameo at the end of the movie . Bharti Singh played as Preet who works in the spa . Both movies have been directed by Anurag Singh , written by Dheeraj Ratan , music by Jatinder Shah and editted by Manish More . Commercially both films have been historic for the Punjabi film industry breaking all records . Diljit Dosanjh’s other recent projects other than these two monumental films have been the religious albums , ‘Sikh’ (2012) and ‘Sikh 2′ (2013) . Another album by the name of ‘Back to basics’ (2012) in which tracks such as ‘Khaarku’ , ‘Truck’ , ‘Strawberry’ , ‘Chunni’ were blockbusters . Diljit Dosanjh’s recent single , ‘Proper Patola’ , reached more than 2 million views on Youtube within a month of its release . His future projects include ‘Mukhtiar chadha’ . ‘Mukhtiar Chadha’ is a story of Simple Man by the name of Mukhtiar who belongs to a Middle class society in Delhi with his Mother. He wants to be a rich man and fulfill dreams . Another upcoming project of his is ’1984 Punjab’ , in which he plays the role of a boy who left home during the tormented year of 1984. Lastly Diljit Dosanjh is doing the first film of Neeru Bajwa’s production titled, ‘Next to Gurdas Maan’ .He reckons that this is the golden period of Punjabi cinema and Punjabi music industry . He says budgets of the films are rising , quality is getting better and the future of the industry looks very bright .

Dominating the Punjabi music industry for just under two decades , Babbu Maan appeals to the youth of Punjab in particular . An actor , producer , singer , music director , lyricist and a writer , Maan was born on march 29 , 1975 in village Khant Maanpur in the Fatehgarh Sahib district of Punjab, India .He is the youngest of his three siblings . Babbu maan made his debut in Punjabi music industry with the release of his album , ‘Sajjan Rumal de Gaya’ in 1998 . The album was a super-hit and Babbu Maan rose to fame . The following year he published the album , ‘Tu Meri Miss India’ , which was again a massive hit . Some of his popular tracks of the album were ‘Neendran’ , ‘Miss India’ , ‘Tupka Tupka’ and ‘Pind Pehra Lagda’ . Babbu maan released the albums ‘Saun di Jhadi’ , ‘Oh Chann Ohi Rattan’ and ‘Pyaas: in search of destiny’ in 2001 , 2004 , and 2005 respectively under the record label of T-series . ‘Pyaas’ was one of his best selling albums which also had the famous song ‘Mittran di Chatri’ . In 2003 he worked alongside the likes of playback singers Sukhwinder Singh and Jaspinder Narula for the film ‘Hawayein’. Babbu Maan made his debut in Hindi films with a supporting role in Hawayein . The film was banned in India but was a huge success in the overseas market . In 2007 Maan released his first hindi album titled ‘Mera Gham’ and two years later in 2009 he released his first religious album titled ‘Singh better than King’ . The religious album ‘Singh better than King’ got him surrounded with controversy . In one of the tracks title ‘Ek Baba Nanak Si’ , Babbu Maan goes on to say that Baba Nanak was one of his kind and nowdays there are babas/saints all over Punjab who on the name of seva and religion earn bags of They have luxurious cars at their convenience and on the other hand mighty Guru Nanak Dev ji walked on foot all over the globe to spread his message . This message in the song got a strong reaction from the babas of Punjab . They strongly protested this song and the artist as well . The song caused debates in Punjab across various levels . Babbu maan’s recent released album goes by the name of ‘Talaash: in search of soul’ . The album is his first Punjabi commercial album after 8 years . The album established itself at the top of the iTunes World Albums charts in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK and the USA.Babbu Maan is the first indian artist ever to enter Billboard charts for his album Talaash . He has also lent his voice for Punjabi films such as ‘Waagah’ and ‘Dil Tainu Karda Ae Pyar’ and in Hindi films as well such as ‘Vaada Raha’, ‘Crook’ and ‘Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster’ . In 2010, Babbu Maan recieved PTC music award for the song ‘Challa’ from ‘Crook’ . As Maan was not present for the show , legendary singer Gurdas Maan accepted the award on Babbu Maan’s behalf, and referred to him as “Kalakaran da Mirza” . Babbu Maan owns the music label ‘Swag Music’ and is keen to promote new talent. Maan is the ambassador for the newly set-up NGO in Punjab: One Hope, One Chance. Babbu Maan made his debut in Punjabi film industry with ‘Rabb Ne Banaiyan Jodiean’ in 2006 and worked alongside Gurpreet Guggi , Puneet Issar , Swathi Varma and Rana Ranbir among many others . Babbu maan continued his acting career in Punjabi film with ‘Hashar : A Love Story’ and ‘Ekam – Son of Soil’ . His recent films include ‘Hero Hitler in Love’ , ‘Desi Romeos’ and ‘Dil Tainu Karda Hai Pyar’ . His future project ‘Prince Of Patiala’ is set to be released in 2014 which has not only been produced under Babbu Maan’s production label but also written by him . Punjabi music industry is incomplete without the mention of living legend Jazzy B . Jaswinder Singh Bains was born on April 1 1975 in village Durgapur , Nawanshahar district Jalandhar, Punjab .Jazzy B’s family shifted to Vancouver , Canada when he was 5 years old . Early on Jazzy B set his own style and image starting from his school days . As a teenager Jazzy B worked at a construction site and also became a star ice hockey player for his high school . He used to sing at weddings and parties .Some of his friends persuaded him to take Bhangra seriously as a career . Jazzy B turned professional at the age of 18 , with the release of the superhit album ,”Ghuggian da Jorra” . After the album Jazzy B shifted to England where he currently resides . He released all his albums with Sukhshinder Shinda as the producer , known as the ‘Music Man’ of the industry . Together the duo have collaborated and created some of Bhangra’s biggest hits such as , “Londono Patola” , “Naag” , “Sardara”, “Dil Luteya” , “Tera Roop”, and “Soorma” . In 2005 , they also pulled over a record crowd of 65,000 at Paramount Canada’s Wonderland near Toronto when they were on tour to promote their albums ,”Romeo” and “Balle” . Jazzy b’s fame and success can be credited to not only his talent but his unique style of appearance as well . Also he has mixed both the traditional Punjabi folk style and modern westernized global music together and created his own blend . Jazzy B is the best selling Bhangra artist to date which speaks volumes of his talent and marketing strategy . He exclusively works for Sukhshinder Shinda . Jazzy B always says that when he was 4 years of age Bhangra legend Ustad Kuldeep Manak had come to do a akhara in Durgapur . Jazzy B’s dreams came true when he recorded the album “Maharajas” with Kuldeep Manak and his son Yudhvir Manak which went on to be a blockbuster album . In 2006 Jazzy B played a cameo role performing the song , “Chukk de Punjabi” in the movie “Teesri Aankh” . Jazzy B made his debut in Punjabi films with the recently released super-hit film ,”Best of Luck” where he plays the role of a gangster by the name of ‘Goli’ . His character in the movie is against abuse of drugs and the film also revolves around a love story . In this movie Jazzy B acted with co-star Gippy Grewal as ‘Kullu’ and Binnu Dhillon as ‘Happy’ . Other star cast of the film includes the likes of , Simran Kaur Mundi ,Sonam Bajwa , Puneet Issar , Karamjit Anmol and Miss Pooja . Recent controversy which surrounded Jazzy B was his chart-buster and enthralling song , ‘Baagi’ . The song was part of a movie ‘Sadda Haq’ which was banned by the Punjab government but later released by the Supreme Court . Jazzy B follows football passionately , in particular the English Premiere League . He is a massive and avid fan of Liverpool Football Club (est.1982) .

Punjabi canadian real estate developer , Bob Singh Dhillon , was born in 1965 in Japan . Bob Singh Dhillon’s primary education was in Bishan Cotton School , Shimla . He has fond memories of the school saying that it was mainly Punjabi dominated . His grandfather left Punjab to start the North China Shipping Company in Hong Kong. Bob Singh Dhillon’s father then took the family to Liberia to continue the trading business before they fled to Vancouver after the civil war erupted. One of the things his father was looking for after the civil war broke out was safety and a place where this never happens, hence he chose Canada . Having lost most of their belongings in the move, the family had to practically start from scratch.This led Dhillon to forge his own chapter as a trader . Bob Singh Dhillon’s first job was in real estate. At 19 years of age Dhillon bought his first two houses. He renovated them and sold them and made a profit of around CDN$18,000 . Today he is one of the richest Indians in Canada. The CEO of Mainstreet Equity Corporation has netted a fortune by following a simple model: to buy undervalued mid-market apartment blocks, refurbish them, set higher rental rates and watch the money roll in. Bob Singh Dhillon says Canada has more oil in Alberta than Saudi Arabia and has every possible resource you can think of that is getting exploited right now, and as well as reserves for at least another generation or two . But Dhillon does not deal solely in apartment buildings. He owns a 3,000-acre holiday resort in Belize, Central America, where his neighbors include Madonna and Leonardo DiCaprio. While the world’s eyes are on the man-made Palm Islands in Dubai, Dhillon insists his Platinum Coast of the Belize peninsula can match its rival in the oil-rich United Arab Emirates.When asked about India and Punjab as investment regions he says there are many issues such as bad planning , black money ,loose policies . But he reckons that during his recent visit to Punjab he noticed there is a silent revolution going on in the IT sector .Literally every buliding and small houses have people from the IT sector and the area is full of small scale IT companies . The government needs to capture this talent , change the laws and create better policies and an environment where it is a free market and entrepreneurs are left to develop their businesses. Bob Singh Dhillon says that his future investment and market would be in the United States . His net worth is over $1bn in assets .

Rai Bahadur Mohan Singh Oberoi was born on 15th August, 1898 in a small village, Bhaun, in district Jhelum, now in Pakistan. M.S Oberoi’s father died when he was six months old . M.S Oberoi got his primary education from Rawalpindi and a Bachelor’s degree from Lahore .In 1922 he fled the ravages of a virulent plague and went to seek some fortune in Shimla. He found a job at a monthly salary of INR 50, as the front desk clerk at the Cecil Hotel. The enthusiasm and intelligence displayed by M.S Oberoi impressed the manager of the hotel , Mr. Grove .A few years later, when Mr. Clarke acquired a small hotel he asked Mr. Oberoi to assist him. It was here, at Clarkes Hotel, that Mr. Oberoi gained first hand experience in all aspects of operating a hotel. In 1934, M.S Oberoi acquired The Clarkes Hotel from his mentor, by mortgaging his wife’s jewelry and all his assets. In 1938, he signed a lease to takeover operations of the five hundred room Grand Hotel in Calcutta, which was up for sale following a cholera epidemic. With his customary confidence and sheer determination to succeed, he was able to convert this hotel into a highly profitable business venture.Mr. Oberoi had purchased shares in Associated Hotels of India (AHI), which owned Cecil and Corstophans hotels in Shimla, Maidens and Imperial hotels in Delhi and a hotel each in Lahore, Murree, Rawalpindi and Peshawar. In 1943, M.S Oberoi acquired controlling stake in AHI. He thus became the first Indian to run the country’s largest and finest hotel chain.just prior to Indian independence, M.S Oberoi met and intimately interacted with the would-be leaders of Free India, all of whom were, at one time or other, guests at his hotels.In 1959, The Oberoi Group became the first group to start flight catering operations in India. In 1965, M.S Oberoi opened the first modern, five star international hotel in the country, The Oberoi Intercontinental, in Delhi. In 1966 he established the prestigious Oberoi School of Hotel Management, recognized by the International Hotel Association in Paris. In 1973, The Oberoi Group opened the 35 storey Oberoi Sheraton in Mumbai. Therefore, he decided to establish his own travel agency. He was presented the Order of The Republic, First Class by the President of Egypt. He got an Honorary Doctorate of Business Administration from the International Management Centre, Buckingham, UK. Sunil mittal was born on June 15, 1950 in Ludhiana, Punjab . He did his graduation from Punjab University with a degree in Bachelor of Arts and Science.His father , Sat Paul Mittal was an M.P but Sunil Mittal decided not to pursue a career in politics. After graduating Mittal partnered with his friend and formed a small bicycle business with Rs. 20,000. Mittal calculated that his business would not gain much exposure in Ludhiana . So he moved out to Mumbai in 1979. In three years Mittal collected his profit and in 1982 started a full fledged business importing generators from Japan. He acquired skills and experience related to marketing and working of the business .Later two companies were assigned by the government to produce generators locally so the government banned import of generators .During his trip to Taiwan in 1982 , Mittal was fascinated by electronic push button phones and introduced them to india .In 1986, Sunil Mittal incorporated Bharti Telecom Limited (BTL) and entered into deal with Siemens AG of Germany for manufacture of electronic push button phones. From here Mittal expanded his business and by early 1990s, Sunil Mittal was making fax machines, cordless phones and other telecom gear as well . Sunil Mittal clinched Delhi cellular license in collaboration with French telecom group Vivendi in 1992 . In 1995 Bharti Cellular Limited (BCL) was founded to offer cellular services under the brand name ‘AirTel’. ‘AirTel’ became regarded as a reliable telecom service provider and soon crossed the 2-million mobile subscriber mark. In 2001, BCL entered into a joint venture with Singapore Telecom International for a $650-million submarine cable project, India’s first ever undersea cable link connecting Chennai in India and Singapore. In 2006 the Bharti group forged a deal with the US retail giant Wal-Mart to start a number of retail stores across India.’Airtel’ surpassed its contemporaries with its unbeatable star power which included the likes of Sharukh Khan, R. Madhavan, A.R Rehman, Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Vidya Balan and Sharman Joshi. He is now eyeing the African and South Asian markets to build a global empire . He was chosen as one of the top entrepreneurs in the world for the year 2000 and amongst ‘Stars Of Asia’, by ‘Business Week’. He also received IT Man of the Year Award 2002 from Dataquest and CEO Of the Year, 2002 Award (World HRD Congress). On charitable front the Bharti Foundation has funded over 50 schools in Madhya Pradesh and also donated Rs 200 million to IIT Delhi for building a Bharti School of Technology and Management. It was set up in the year 2000 with an aim to bring education to small towns, villages and remotest areas of the country.The foundation started the Satya Bharti School Programme in 2006, to forward its efforts.
