Malkit Singh Boparai was born on 13 September , 1962 in village Hussainpur , Jalandhar . He was raised in Nakodar , Jalandhar and moved to Birmingham , England in 1984 . From a very young age Malkit Singh had the knack and flair of singing and playing musical instruments . Before moving to England Malkit Singh studied in Khalsa College , Jalandhar in 1980 where he obtained his B.A degree in Arts . It was here where he met his ustad – Professor Inderjit Singh . Malkit Singh staying true to the meaning of his name , one who rules the world, spread Punjabi music across continents in the early days of the industry and is a major contributor to the industry’s current success . Malkit Singh made his debut onto the scene with the album , ‘Nach Gidhe Wich’ . The album was an all time blockbuster with tracks such as ,’Nach Gidhe Wich kar Gayee Kamal’ and ‘Gur Naloon Ishq Mitha’ . Malkit Singh went on to release many albums some of them being ‘I Love Golden Star’ , ‘Putt Sardara De’ , ‘Chott Nigary Lawo’ , ‘Fast Forward’ , ‘Hai Shava’ , ‘Gal Sunja’ , ‘Singho Ho Jo Kathe’ , ‘Chak Deh Dholia’ , ‘Midas Touch’ , ‘Midas Touch 2′ among many others . With sales of over 4.9 million records in his two decade plus career , Malkit Singh was listed by the Guinness Book of Records as the biggest selling Bhangra solo artist of all time in 2000 . His tracks ‘Chal Hun’ and ‘Jind Mahi’ from the blockbuster ‘Bend It Like Beckham’ film soundtrack were also big hits . Malkit Singh also sang songs in the albums , ‘The New Adventures of Jassi Sidhu’ (2008) and ‘The Folk King'(2012) . ‘The Folk King’ was an album released as a tribute to the legendary one and all , Kuldeep Manak . Other famous artists such as A.S. Kang, Jazzy B, Sukshinder Shinda, Manmohan Waris Balwinder Safri and Angrej Ali also contributed to the album . Malkit Singh has a long list of awards and honors bestowed upon him . In 1997 he received the recognition of the city of Los Angles for services to the Indian community as the Best Punjabi Male Singer and the Most Outstanding Bhangra Track for ‘Tootak Tootak Thothiyan’ . He also received the ‘punjabi cultural award’ from the former prime minister of India , I.K Gujral . Malkit Singh is also the first Punjabi singer to be honored with an MBE . The ‘Most Excellent Order of the British Empire’ is nominated by the British government and is presented by the Queen of United Kingdom . The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry established on 4th june 1917 by King George V. This signifies and highlights the contribution made by Malkit Singh through his songs and his music .
