Summary: The first Indian in space , Rakesh Sharma was born on 13 January 1949 in Patiala , Punjab to Hindu Gaur parents . His early education was at St.George’s grammar school , Hyderabad , India . He was admitted to the National Defense Academy as an air force plebe in July 1956 . A focused and a dedicated student, he was commissioned into the IAF( Indian Air Force) in 1970 to become a pilot . Sharma rapidly progressed through the ranks . In 1971 , Rakesh Sharma flew the Mikoyan-Gurabich a Russian jet .The same year war broke out .

Biography:The first Indian in space , Rakesh Sharma was born on 13 January 1949 in Patiala , Punjab to Hindu Gaur parents . His early education was at St.George’s grammar school , Hyderabad , India . He was admitted to the National Defense Academy as an air force plebe in July 1956 . A focused and a dedicated student, he was commissioned into the IAF( Indian Air Force) in 1970 to become a pilot . Sharma rapidly progressed through the ranks . In 1971 , Rakesh Sharma flew the Mikoyan-Gurabich a Russian jet .The same year war broke out . During the 1971 War, Sharma flew missions in his MiG aircraft with considerable success. He was a squadron leader with the Indian Air Force, when he flew into space in 1984 as part of a joint programme between the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Soviet Intercosmos space program. He spent eight days in space on board the Salyut 7 space station. Rakesh Sharma joined 2 other Soviet cosmonauts aboard the Soyuz T-11 spacecraft which blasted off on April 2, 1984.The Soyuz T-11 docked and transfered the three member Soviet-Indian international crew which also included the Ship’s Commander Y.V. Malyshev and Flight Engineer G.M. Strekalov (USSR) to the SALYUT-7 Orbital Station . Rakesh Sharma was conferred with the honor of hero of soviet union upon his return from space . The Indian Government awarded Rakesh Sharma and the other two soviet members of his mission with the ‘Ashok Chakra’ . He joined the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited in 1987 after retiring with the rank of wing commander . Rakesh Sharma served as a chief test pilot in the H.A.L Nasik division until 1992 . Thereafter , he moved to Banglore and worked as a chief test pilot of H.A.L . Sharma retired from test flying in 2001 . Currently Rakesh Sharma is the chairperson for the Automated Workflow.

Biography:Ravish Malhotra was born on 25 December 1943 in Lahore (now in present day Pakistan) is a retired Air Commodore of the Indian Air Force.He became an Air Force test pilot, later stationed at the test center in Bangalore. Ravish Malhotra was also the Air Officer Commanding of Hindon Air Force Station near Delhi . In 1982, he was chosen to train for spaceflight in the Soviet Union’s Intercosmos program Malhotra served as backup for Rakesh Sharma on the Soyuz T-11 mission which launched the first Indian citizen into space. Ravish Malhotra was awarded the Kirti Chakra in 1984.Malhotra is presently the Co-Founder & Chief Mentor of the aerospace division of Dynamatic Technologies.

Summary: The first Indian woman in space , Kalpna Chawla was born on July 1 1961 to parents Banarasi Lal Chawla and Sanjyothi Chawla . She was the youngest of the four children . Kalpna means idea or imagination . Her interest in flight was inspired by J.R.D Tata , India’s first pilot .

Biography:The first Indian woman in space , Kalpna Chawla was born on July 1 1961 to parents Banarasi Lal Chawla and Sanjyothi Chawla . She was the youngest of the four children . Kalpna means idea or imagination . Her interest in flight was inspired by J.R.D Tata , India’s first pilot . Chawla was a strict vegetarian . She completed her basic education at Tagore public school in Karnal ,Haryana . In 1982 , she graduated with her Bachelor Degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Punjab Engineering college in Chandigarh . Kalpana Chawla moved to U.S.A after her graduation. In 1984 she graduated with M.S. Degree in aerospace degree from the University of Texas at Arlington . Two years later Kalpana Chawla graduated with a second M.S. Degree and a PhD in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1988. Chawla joined NASA Astronaut Corps in march 1995 and was selected for her first flight in 1996 . A year later in November her first space mission began as a part of a six member crew that flew the space shuttle ‘Columbia Flight STS-87′ . After completing her post flight activities of flight STS-87 Kalpana Chawla was given a technical position in the astronaut office to work on the space station for which she was recognized and awarded . In the year 2000 Chawla was selected for her second space flight as part of STS-107 . Unfortunately the mission was repeatedly delayed due to technical problems . Finally in January 16 2003 Kalpana Chawla was on board with the rest of the crew . She died of February 2003 when the space shuttle disintegrated over Texas during re-entry into the earth’s atmosphere . In her remembrance ‘The Kalpana Chawla Outstanding Recent Alumni Award’ at the University of Colorado, given since 1983, was renamed for Chawla. Asteroid 51826 Kalpanachawla,was one of seven named asteroids after Columbia’s crew.The Government of Haryana established the Kalpana Chawla Planetarium in Jyotisar, Kurukshetra.The Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, named the Kalpana Chawla Space Technology Cell in her honor.NASA had dedicated a supercomputer to Chawla.Such has been the respect and honor chawla has earned all over the world . Kalpana chawla ‘s father fondly remembers her and says that she was god-fearing and did nitnem( early morning prayers) everyday .
