M.S Banga

Manvinder Singh Banga was born on 31st October , 1954 in Shimla . His father was Lt.general Harbhajan Singh Banga and Ajaypal Singh Banga current president and chief executive officer of Mastercard is his brother . In 1975 Mr. M.S Banga graduated from Indian Institute of Technology , Delhi and did a B.tech degree in Mechanical Engineering .He went on to do MBA from Institute of Management , Ahemdabad where he met his future wife Kamini . He is a gold medalist from both institutions. After graduation M.S Banga joined Hindustan Lever Limited , a subsidiary of Unilever ,as a management trainee . In 1993 Mr. Banga was appointed Head of the Personal Products Business of Hindustan Lever. Between August 1995 and 1998, he was Executive Director and Head of Soaps & Detergents which was Hindustan Lever’s largest business. M.S Banga was appointed as the category leader for the detergent business for the Central Asia and Middle-East business group . A new business model was created that won Unilever’s Foods Innovation Award in 1998 when he led the company’s initiative into mass-market foods . Later that year he was appointed as senior vice-president and moved to the Unilever Head Office in London in charge of the global Hair & Oral Care categories . His performance in London landed him the role of Chairman of Hindustan Lever in may 2000 and gave him the responsibility of Unilever’s overall operations in the South Asian region. With sales of US$2.2bn and employing more than 41,000 people Hindustan Lever is certainly India’s largest consumer-goods company . In 2004 M.S Banga was appointed President, Home and Personal Care Asia based in Singapore. In this role he was responsible for a €7 billion business across North-East Asia, China, South-East Asia, Australasia and South Asia, including India.In 2005 he joined the Unilever Executive Board as President, Foods and created the Foods Category Organisation.In 2008, M.S Banga was given additional responsibility for the Home & Personal Care categories. In 2010 Mr Banga was awarded the Padma Bhushan , the highest indian civillian award by the president of india. He is currently a Non-Executive Director on the Board of Thomson Reuters, Marks & Spencers PLC, and is on the Prime Minister of India’s Council for Trade & Industry . In 2013 after 33 years with one organisation Unilever , M.S Banga has hung up his Unilever boots and moved on to private equity firm Clayton Dubilier & Rice (CD&R) as an operating partner.
