Atletico de Kolkata sign Postiga .

The 32-year-old Portuguese international shall don the Red and White stripes of Sourav Ganguly co-owned team.

Atletico de Kolkata have announced on Wednesday Helder Postiga as their marquee signing for the second edition of Indian Super League (ISL).

Last season Postiga plied his trade for Deportivo La Coruna in Spain where he scored just once in 14 matches. He has played for the likes of Valencia, Lazio, Real Zaragoza, Sporting CP, Tottenham and Porto as well in his illustrious 15-year professional career.

He was part of the treble winning squad of Porto under Jose Mourinho when they famously clinched the UEFA Cup, Portuguese league and cup in 2002-03 season.

With 71 appearances for the Selecao, he has scored 27 goals and participated in 2006 and 2014 World Cups, apart from representing his side in the European Championship of 2004, 2008 and 2012.

Atletico de Kolkata chose not to hand Luis Garcia a new deal for the second edition of the tournament despite the Spaniard having an excellent season, which was hampered by injuries.

They were linked with a host of names such as Claudio Pizarro, Roman Pavyluchenko and Tuncay Sanli. However, the club finally settled on Postiga as coach Antonio Habas was keen to sign a striker as their marquee player.

“The presence of Postiga will definitely bolster the team for the season ahead and also allow the Indian and International players to learn from him about the way he goes about preparing for a major tournament like ISL. He will have an altogether different experience when he plays in front of Kolkata’s football aficionados. I am sure Postiga’s presence will make the city and ATK fans proud,” said coach Habas.
