Nirmal Rishi was born in the village Khiva Kalan,Mansa,Punjab to Baldev Krishan Rishi (father)and Bachni Devi(mother. Nirmal did M.Phil. in Physical Education at Government College for Physical Education in Patiala and worked as a lecturer in the college. She started her career with theatre in 1966 in Patiala. She joined Harpal Tiwana and his wife Neena who started a group Punjab Kala Manch .Her first play was Adhure Sapna.She shifted to Ludhiana with the theatre group and did many more plays. Her group staged many plays in London, Canada and America.

Nirmal Rishi is an actress,Theatre artist and a retired lecturer.She is best known as an actress. In 1983 , she rose to fame for her role as Gulabo Massi in the movie Loung da Lishkara.She has acted in more than 60 films and did a friendly appearance in the Bollywood movie Dangal (2016)
She has been awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at PTC Film Awards(2017),Filfare Award(Punjabi)for best supporting Role for the film Nikka Zail dar(2017) and Nikka Zalidar 2(2018).She received the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2024.
FAMILY LIFE:
Nirmal Rishi is unmarried. Â She had two brothers who passed away when they were infants. Nirmal has two elder sisters and two younger brothers ,one of whom is named Roshan Lal.
