Captain Amrinder Singh was born in Patiala to the Phulkian Dynasty. He attended school in Shimla at Loreto Convent and Lawrence School in Kasauli,Solan District before going to The Doon School in Dehradun.He served the Indian Army after graduating from the National Defence Academy and the Military Academy.He served the Army in 1964 and left it early 1965

Captain Amrinder Singh is a politician. Singh was first elected to the Lok Sabha in 1980.In 1984,he resigned from Parliament in protest against the Operation Blue Star .He joined the Shiromani Akali Dal and later broke away from them to form a party, Shiromani Akali Dal (Panthis) which later merged with the Congress in 1998.He became the chief minister of Punjabin 2002 and continued till 2007. He won the 2017 Punjab Legislative Assembly election and was sworn in as the 26th Punjab Chief Minister. On 18th September 2021, he resigned as the chief minister of Punjab due to the lacking of confidence in his leadership by the Punjab Congress MLAs.He was succeeded by Charanjit Singh Channi. Captain left the Congress Party on 28th October 2021. On 19th September 2022 , Singh along with his party merged into the Bharatiya Janata Party .

Captain Amrinder Singh was born to parents Maharaja Sir Yadavindra Singh and Maharani Mohinder Kaur of Patiala.He has an elder sister Heminder Kaur who is married to former Foreign Minister K.Natwar Singh. He married Preneet Kaur who has seved as a Member of Parliament and was a Minister of State in the Ministry of External Affairs from 2009 to 2012.He has one son ,Raninder Singh and one daughter Jai Inder Kaur.
